Quartet may be his masterpiece.”
-The New York Times

“Quartet makes the most out of a variety of feelings. The composer has equal acumen in waxing forlorn and waxing frivolous…Frisell’s instrument is one of contemporary jazz’s utterly singular voices.”-Billboard

Performance *****
Sonics *****

Bill Frisell is a soulful jazz minimalist with a sophisticated sense of harmony, a daring rhythmic approach, and an instantly recognizable, personal sound–as if Carl Perkins and Duane Eddy took on Otis Rush and Bill Evans in a bridge tournament. Every note is carefully sculpted, imbued with a bluesy, lightly Echoplexed halo, and elongated like taffy in a manner suggestive of the enigmatic Peter Green. Upon occasion, Bill will transmogrify into an 800-lb gorilla with a touch of distortion, but more often than not this affable galoot is content to make bricks with straw–a remarkable melodist who can transmute single notes into sapphire tears.

For those more impressed with the meat than the motion, Frisell’s floor routine may seem simplistic. Besides, why would someone who […]

“The delicate interplay … between pianist Hersch and guitarist Frisell … brings freshness and understated luster to it all.”
Entertainment Weekly

“These guys are too distinctive to clone the past. Their romanticism is edged with a contemporary tartness, a tangy irony that infuses canny arrangements and biting solos. And so they remap and reinvigorate … standards like “What is This Thing Called Love?” and “I Got Rhythm” in sly, appealing and often hilarious ways.”

“Bill Frisell makes such consistently great records that it would be easy to take the guitarist for granted. That would be sad, since no one refracts age-old Americana through a cutting-edge prism with the warm-hearted, fleet-minded individuality of Frisell. With “Good Dog, Happy Man,” he has crafted one of his earthiest essays yet – a sort of funky follow-up to his sublime “Nashville” album from 1997. Backed by an ultra-hip band – pedal-steel artisan Greg Leisz, bassist Viktor Krauss, organ grinder Wayne Horvitz, and drum legend Jim Keltner – Frisell has forged originals whose folky melodies and big-sky grooves make them seem like old friends in snazzy new clothes. Tellingly, the outfit channels the traditional “Shenandoah” with Ry Cooder in tow, and its sepia-toned melancholy pairs perfectly with Frisell’s dusty ballads, like the […]

Frisell (multi-tracked) builds moody spiraling guitar pieces and alone, where he explores spatial possibilites with a minimalist’s ear… a milestone in the career of a true innovator – enchanting as anything he has done and a clear window into his muse.
– CMJ

“Handling all the instruments on Ghost Town (guitars, 6-string banjo, bass, and loops), Bill Frisell merges his head-long dive into roots music with his trademark loops and sonic ingenuity – all to stunning effect. Frisell’s compositions run the gamut from pure Americana (“Fingers Snappin’ and Toes Tappin'”) to tweaked-out soundscapes (“Creep” and “Outlaw”). On the standard “When I Fall in Love,” he plays the tune’s melody on the 6-string banjo over beautifully comped chords that pulse with slow tremolo. Hank Williams’ “I’m So Lonely I […]

Sun is streaming in through the window on a fine spring morning, the Papers have just been delivered, fresh coffee is brewing and there’s a new Bill Frisell album on the CD player. It doesn’t get much better than this. Frisell is a wonderfully talented and skilled jazz guitarist, but his appeal goes deeper and wider than mere jazz brilliance. His tone infiltrates the environment and catches your ear; it’s a sound that can contain good humour, or melancholy, or nostalgia, yet still be utterly fresh and un-cliched, and it’s unquestionably an adult taste: complex, rich, full of layers. Even when he plays the simplest of tunes, such as “Pretty Flowers Were Made for Blooming or Where Do We Go?”, the touch and timbre adds a dimension of experience and authority that few musicians […]
